If you are a landowner in Adams, Clinton, Centre, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Huntingdon, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lycoming, Perry, or York counties, Pennsylvania, this free, confidential tool can help you get information about restoration opportunities on your property that can improve the ecological conditions you care about.

Using state-of-the art data analysis, Restoration Reports generates a customized report for your property, including the watershed you are a part of, the wildlife species that may live on your property, and whether you are in close proximity to an impaired stream.

You can then select your management priorities, for example, improving the hunting and fishing on your property, or supporting your agricultural land uses.

What is a forested buffer?

A riparian forest buffer is a planting of trees, shrubs, and grasses along a stream or river. It can include many different species and perform several functions. A well-designed riparian forest buffer protects water quality by slowing the flow of water, nutrients, and sediment into waterways, especially during severe rain events. Buffers protect water quality, enhance aquatic and wildlife habitats, and can provide income opportunities for landowners. Buffers are one of the most cost-effective restoration practices you can install, and are the focus of this tool. Other vegetative practices may also be suitable in farm settings.

Envision the Susquehanna is an initiative born out of the spirit of community. Its mission is to improve the ecological and cultural integrity throughout the Susquehanna landscape and in so doing improve the quality of life for all citizens along the river. The initiative seeks to add value to the on-going efforts of the many organizations working throughout the Susquehanna watershed – from its headwaters in Cooperstown, NY to the end of the upper reaches of the West Branch and its connection with the Chesapeake Bay in Havre de Grace, MD – by engaging all stakeholders, including the general public, to highlight the stories and places that make up the identity of the Susquehanna and develop community-based solutions to ensure these places are conserved for future generations.

The ultimate goal is for the initiative to result in an increased awareness of the natural, historic, and cultural resources that exist along the river, the creation of new opportunities to connect people to the Susquehanna, and the improvement of ecological and cultural integrity of the landscape. In so doing, Envision the Susquehanna will also contribute to the economic sustainability of those living along the river.
